What: See the link, which is a discussion of the geochemistry of kimberlite, the mineral in which diamonds are formed. Carbon dioxide is dissolved in molten rock. As this rock comes to the surface of the earth it encounters silica compounds which precipitate the carbon and make the magma lighter.
